London, UK - "We just don't know." That was the brave declaration from a number of experts speaking at the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) European Meeting on Hypertension 2012 here this past weekend admitted that there is much that remains unknown in the field. Evidence for seemingly straightforward issues, such as what should be the ideal number to lower blood pressure to in different groups of individuals, is lacking, they acknowledged, and many new trials need to be performed. But in the meantime, guidelines need to offer the best direction they can for those who have the task of treating hypertension, which is increasingly falling upon the shoulders of general practitioners and family doctors, they noted.
